What Is Freemasonry
Freemasonry is believed to have emerged out of the stonemasonry guilds of the Middle Ages. Working stonemasons were inducted as members of lodges where they would gather to discuss their trade. Due to the teachings, practices and secrecy that surrounded the early lodges, Freemasonry had and still is, notoriously famous for being known as one of the largest secret society in the world.
In Freemasonry, there are three degrees which a Freemason progresses through; those of Apprentice, Fellow Craft and Master Mason. Each degree will reveal different meanings of the symbols of Freemasonry and the member will be entrusted with more secrets as he is initiated into these roles.
Contrary to popular belief, Freemasonry is not a Christian institution. However, Freemasons must believe in the existence of a supreme being. As such, this fraternal organisation welcomes men of any faith, ethnic or social background provided they have a shared belief in the fatherhood of God, and the brotherhood of man.
The privilege of admission into the brotherhood of Freemasonry requires not only belief and faith in God, but to possess honourable and noble intentions on the onset. A Freemason is required and obligated to keep the secrets shared with him for the rest of his life and is expected to always uphold his character in line with the teachings of Freemasonry which expounds morality and obedience to the laws of the country in residence. A Freemason is encouraged and expected to be charitable and supportive of not only institutions and organisations, but towards individuals who are in need of assistance.
Without a doubt, acceptance into the fellowship that is Freemasonry is marked by a forging of a brotherhood, a camaraderie unlike any other, where all members are equal, regardless of job, rank, race or creed. It is a rare opportunity indeed to be one of some estimated six million Freemasons worldwide and share in their vision, goals, and yes, some secret rites of passage.
